Tarporley Municipal Cemetery
Tarporley Parish Council is the burial authority for the municipal cemetery, located behind St Helen’s churchyard on High Street, Tarporley. The cemetery is accessed via the path from St Helen’s Church lych gate.
The cemetery is open to the public daily from dawn to dusk.
Who can be buried here
Burial rights are generally restricted to those whose normal place of residence was within the civil parish of Tarporley for at least five years before their death. Exceptions may be made for people with close connections to the parish — please speak to the Clerk.
Arranging a burial
All enquiries should be directed to the Parish Clerk as early as possible. You will need to give at least three working days’ notice before an intended burial, using the application forms provided by the Council. These can be downloaded below, obtained from the Clerk, or collected from local funeral service providers.
Burials take place Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) between 09:30 and 16:00.
The Council does not arrange funerals or engage monumental masons on behalf of families.
Fees
A schedule of fees is available from the Clerk or on the Council Documents page. Fees are payable at the time of application.
You can also pre-purchase an exclusive right of burial (subject to availability — limited to 50 in total, and restricted to Tarporley residents on the electoral roll).
Memorials
All memorials require the Clerk’s approval before being erected, and must be made from natural stone. Size limits apply:
- Full burial graves: maximum 910mm high × 610mm wide × 150mm thick
- Cremation graves: maximum 610mm high × 460mm wide × 150mm thick
A permanently fixed vase may be placed in front of the memorial. No kerbs, chippings, artificial flowers, statues, photographs, lights or other decorations are permitted. Trees, shrubs and plants cannot be planted on graves.
Memorials are erected and remain at the sole risk of the owner. The Council carries out periodic safety inspections and reserves the right to make safe or remove any memorial that poses a risk.
Scattering of ashes
Ashes may be scattered only in the designated areas of the cemetery (the unconsecrated north-east garden corner and westerly boundary). No marker is permitted and no charge is made, but the crematorium certificate is required. Residential eligibility rules apply (see above). Please contact the Clerk to arrange this.
Visiting the cemetery
- Please keep to the paths and take litter and dead flowers home with you
- Dogs are welcome on a lead — please clean up after them
- Children must be under adult supervision at all times
