Tarporley Parish Council is the first tier of local government for the village. We meet monthly, set a small annual budget (the precept), and represent residents on the matters that affect day-to-day life in Tarporley.
What we do
The council looks after the things that local people most often notice and care about: the village green and benches, public bins, allotments, footpaths and rights of way within the parish, and small grants to community groups. We respond to planning applications affecting the parish and provide a formal voice on consultations from Cheshire West and Chester Council and other public bodies.
We don’t run schools, collect bins, fill potholes on the main roads, or police the village — those are the responsibility of other organisations. The Report an issue page explains who to contact for what.
How decisions get made
Decisions are made at full council meetings, which are open to the public. The agenda for each meeting is published at least three working days in advance, along with any supporting papers, on the Meetings & minutes page. Residents are welcome to attend and to speak during the public participation slot at the start of every meeting.
Minutes are published once they have been approved at the following meeting, alongside the original agenda and papers.
Who we are
The council is made up of elected councillors and supported by a clerk and deputy clerk, whom are the council’s only employees.
Councillors
Tarporley is represented by 12 councillors, elected every four years. Casual vacancies between elections are filled either by election or by co-option, depending on the circumstances.
The clerk
The clerk is the council’s professional officer — responsible for agendas, minutes, finances, correspondence, and ensuring the council acts within the law. The clerk is the first point of contact for residents.
Finance & transparency
The council is funded by a small element of the council tax, called the precept. The precept is agreed each January for the following financial year, after a budget review at full council. Public participation is when you are allowed to speak. You are allowed to raise anything related to the parish, but it should not tigger a debate with an answer.
The council works best when more residents take an active interest in it.
