Visiting Tarporley

Tarporley is a Cheshire village with a long history, an unusually pretty High Street, and a lot of independent shops, pubs and cafés. Whether you’re here for an afternoon or planning to spend longer, here’s a small guide to what you’ll find.

A short history

Tarporley appears in the Domesday Book and grew up around its position on what’s now the A49 — a coaching stop between Chester and the Midlands. The High Street’s mix of timber-framed, Georgian and Victorian buildings reflects centuries of steady reinvention rather than a single architectural moment.

The parish church, St Helen’s, dates from the medieval period and is open to visitors. The Tarporley Hunt Club, founded in 1762, is one of the oldest in the country.

What to do

Walk the village

The High Street, Park Road and the surrounding lanes are a pleasant 30-minute wander. Look out for the war memorial, the old village pump, and the Swan and Rising Sun coaching inns.

Getting here

By car

Tarporley is on the A49, between the M56 (junction 10) to the north and the A51 to the south. Parking is available on the High Street (limited) and at the Community Centre car park off Park Road.

By bus

By train

The nearest stations are Cuddington (about 5 miles) and Hartford (about 7 miles), both on the Mid-Cheshire line. Chester station is about a 25-minute drive.
